About service
Kidney ultrasound is an examination of the urinary system performed with a special device – a scanner. This diagnostic method shows the condition of the genitourinary system and the quality of blood flow in the renal vessels. Today, it is one of the most effective methods for detecting pathologies in both women and men.
Ultrasound examination has no side effects, which allows it to be performed repeatedly if necessary, making it possible to monitor treatment dynamics.
Indications for the Examination
This type of ultrasound is prescribed by the attending physician in case of suspected urinary system pathology. The referral may come from a therapist, nephrologist, neurologist, oncologist, or cardiologist.
Symptoms that adults should pay attention to include:
Pain in the lumbar region,
Abnormal blood, stool, or urine tests,
Mass formations,
Endocrine system disorders,
High blood pressure and related headaches,
Traumatic kidney injuries.
In such cases, kidney ultrasound is strongly recommended.
Kidney ultrasound can detect:
Urolithiasis,
Chronic and acute pyelonephritis,
Renal cyst,
Malignant and benign tumors,
Inflammatory foci,
Fluid accumulation inside or around the kidney.
Kidney ultrasound allows detailed assessment of the renal arteries and veins, the size and location of stones (if present). If necessary, the adrenal glands are also examined.
Preparation for the Procedure
If only a kidney ultrasound is performed, no preparation is required.
However, it is often combined with other ultrasound studies to provide a complete clinical picture.
If kidney ultrasound is prescribed along with abdominal ultrasound, foods causing gas formation (potatoes, white cabbage, confectionery, cheese, vegetables, fruits, alcohol) should be excluded several days before the procedure, and fasting for 7 hours is required.
If kidney ultrasound is combined with ureter ultrasound, the procedure must be performed with a full bladder. Keep in mind that the bladder fills only about 1.5 hours after drinking water.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure follows a classic protocol:
The patient enters the doctor’s office and describes their symptoms.
The patient removes upper clothing and lies down on the couch.
Using a special probe with water-based gel, the physician performs the scan in several positions: supine, on the right and left sides, and prone. If necessary, the doctor may ask the patient to stand or sit, since the kidneys are located in the retroperitoneal space and may be obscured by abdominal organs.
After the examination, the patient may stand up and wipe off the gel. The conclusion is provided within a few minutes.
The entire study lasts 20–25 minutes.
Types of Kidney Ultrasound
Ultrasonography. Detects tissue changes in the kidneys and reveals various pathologies.
Ultrasound Dopplerography (USDG). Focuses on renal blood vessels and detects their pathologies, such as thrombosis and stenosis.
Advantages of Kidney Ultrasound at Expert Clinics
