About service

Thyroid disorders occur in every third patient. It is known that women are affected much more frequently than men. This is explained by frequent fluctuations in hormonal balance and greater susceptibility to stress. Timely diagnosis of thyroid diseases is the key to the health of the entire organism.

Indications for Ultrasound
A thyroid ultrasound should be performed both in the presence of specific and more general symptoms. Specific symptoms include:

Discomfort in the neck area (pain, redness, swelling),

Sensation of a “lump” in the throat,

Difficulty swallowing,

Disturbance of thermoregulation, when chilliness alternates with excessive sweating,

Severe cough not associated with acute respiratory viral infections or other diseases.

General symptoms to pay attention to include:

Fluctuations in body weight,

Hair loss,

Nail fragility,

Drowsiness,

Cardiac arrhythmia,

Digestive disorders,

Increased nervousness and irritability,

Menstrual cycle disturbances,

Persistent sleepiness.

As a preventive measure, thyroid ultrasound should be performed once a year if you:

are over 40 years old,

are genetically predisposed to thyroid diseases,

are taking hormonal medications,

are planning pregnancy.

If you develop even a couple of the listed symptoms, ultrasound diagnostics should not be delayed. This examination, together with laboratory tests, can accurately determine the condition of the thyroid gland. The earlier you pay attention to symptoms and consult a physician, the easier it is to correct bodily dysfunctions.

Diseases Diagnosed by Ultrasound
Ultrasound diagnostics can detect the following pathologies and diseases:

Diffuse toxic goiter – a group of autoimmune diseases caused by excessive secretion of thyrotropic hormones. In this case, the immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells. These include hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease, Perry’s disease, Basedow’s disease.

Neoplastic processes – most common in women aged 40–60 years. Most lesions are benign, but the risk of metastasis is still present.

Nodular goiter – a group of disorders characterized by the formation of nodular masses.

Cysts – may develop secondary to other thyroid diseases or independently, for example, due to selenium and iodine deficiency, exposure to toxic substances, or decreased immunity.

Hypothyroidism – a disorder in which the thyroid gland produces insufficient hormones.

Thyroid ultrasound also helps detect:

impaired blood flow,

lymph node inflammation,

obstacles to conception.

Contraindications and Limitations
Ultrasound is an absolutely harmless procedure. Annual ultrasound diagnostics of organs, including the thyroid gland, is strongly recommended by physicians of all specialties. This prevents the risk of developing unwanted pathologies.

Preparation for Thyroid Ultrasound
No special preparation is required, but several simple rules should be followed:

Remove jewelry and other items from the neck before the procedure.

The results will be more accurate if the examination is performed on days 7–9 of the menstrual cycle.

Elderly patients should avoid eating for 2 hours before the procedure, as age-related features may provoke nausea.

If a child undergoes thyroid ultrasound for the first time, it is important to explain the procedure in detail to ensure calmness: where, how, and for how long it will be performed, and that it is absolutely painless.

Otherwise, thyroid ultrasound requires no restrictions or special preparation.

How the Examination is Performed

The patient enters the examination room, removes the upper part of clothing and any neck accessories.

The patient lies down on a couch with a pillow or special headrest to facilitate the physician’s view of the gland.

The physician applies a water-based gel to the neck and examines the thyroid gland using a special probe.

The results are issued immediately after the procedure. The physician comments on the findings and provides recommendations for further examinations.
