About service

According to WHO data, more than one million cases of breast cancer are diagnosed worldwide every year, and more than a quarter of these cases occur in women under 50. Thanks to modern technologies, we now have the possibility to prevent the development of this disease. Therefore, women of a certain age must necessarily include breast ultrasound in their annual check-up list.

Indications for Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasound examination of the breasts is recommended for every woman over 35 years of age. For young women aged 20 to 35, it is not mandatory, since breast examination is usually performed by a gynecologist. However, if the physician suspects a nodular formation of uncertain nature, the patient is referred for ultrasound diagnostics.

Risk factors for breast cancer:

Absence of natural reproductive functions, i.e. breastfeeding,

Uncontrolled use of medications, especially oral contraceptives,

Obesity,

Unhealthy lifestyle (lack of physical activity, alcohol and tobacco abuse),

Heredity.

Indications for breast ultrasound include:

Deformation of breast shape,

Changes in nipple shape,

Enlarged or painful lymph nodes in the axillary regions,

Sharp increase in breast size,

Appearance of lumps,

Hyperemia (excessive blood vessel engorgement),

Edema,

Pain,

Purulent nipple discharge,

Ulcerative defects on the skin surface,

Skin desquamation,

Breast injuries,

Pregnancy planning.

Many breast diseases remain asymptomatic for a long time; therefore, annual monitoring of their condition is the best preventive measure.

Despite the safety of ultrasound, at the first symptoms it is necessary to visit a mammologist, who will perform palpation and prescribe further, individually tailored examinations.

As a preventive measure against oncological diseases, women under 40 are recommended to undergo mammologist consultation and ultrasound diagnostics, while women over 40 are also advised to undergo mammography.

Why Undergo Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe and informative method of assessing the condition of the breasts.

What can breast ultrasound reveal or confirm?

Complications during breastfeeding (lactostasis, mastitis),

Inflammatory processes,

Gynecomastia (breast enlargement associated with adipose tissue hypertrophy),

Presence of benign and malignant tumors.

There are certain specifics: ultrasound may miss some small nodules. Therefore, mammography is a more accurate diagnostic method for women over 35. It is a high-precision X-ray that can reveal non-palpable tumors at an early stage.

Ultrasound allows examination of breast tissue structures, blood flow, and milk ducts, assessment of breast implants, and dynamic monitoring in cases of inflammatory diseases.

Contraindications and Limitations

There are none. Breast ultrasound is indicated even for pregnant women, unlike mammography. During pregnancy, the mammary glands become very dense, making X-rays unable to adequately visualize their structure.

Ultrasound involves no radiation exposure, and therefore does not negatively affect breast tissue.

Preparation for Ultrasound

For women of reproductive age, preventive breast ultrasound is performed between days 4 and 8 of the menstrual cycle.

If the patient is in an acute phase or has pronounced symptoms, breast ultrasound can be performed on any day.

How the Examination is Performed

The patient enters the examination room, removes the upper clothing, and lies down on the couch.

The physician applies a water-based gel to the required area and performs the examination. The patient is often asked to place her hands behind her head for a more detailed view.

If the breast size is significantly increased, the examination is performed in a sitting or standing position.
